--some our neighbors, some our cousins--
stalk city streets and village lanes,
shambling forward by the dozens.
Of civic lives there are no traces
in their vacant minds and vacant faces.
Torn clothes, and flesh too dead to bleed:
of air and water they have no need.
They have no use for health insurance;
foreign affairs aren't their concern;
they've lost all hope for safer schools
and brook no interest in bank reforms.
Putrescent zombies, green and swollen,
raise the prospect--not remote!--
that our election could be stolen
by mindless zombies who never vote!
