Dear Paul:
“Unfortunate”? ... “Unhelpful”? That’s all you have to say in response to Trump’s calling other countries (peopled, of course, by those whose skin is darker than his) “s—holes”?
“Unfortunate” is when you stub your toe on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. “Unhelpful” is when you don’t clear your own plate from the table at the end of a family meal.
What Trump said was neither unfortunate nor unhelpful. It was vile … depraved … destructive … contemptible … repulsive … reprehensible … The synonym list is long, but it doesn’t include unfortunate and unhelpful. Sad to say, the appropriate adjectives describe not only what was said, but (let’s face it) the man who said it.
Have you and (it would seem) a majority of legislators in your party no moral compass? No ethical standards? No spine?
I suppose you might try to defend yourself by pointing out that Mitch McConnell, your counterpart in the Senate, hasn’t bestirred himself to say anything, publicly at least, about Trump’s remarks. I don’t know which is worse—not responding at all or responding with the mild and forgiving terms you chose.
While I realize a few courageous Republicans are standing up and speaking out, most are not. You and they are an embarrassment. The toadyism you display might be expected in Kim Jong- Un’s North Korea or Stalin’s old Soviet Union. It has no place here. How long will you continue to bow and scrape? Are there no "better angels" in your nature?
