Bright Spots
If the great American people will only keep their temper, on both sides of the line, the troubles will come to an end, and the question which now distracts the country will be settled just as surely as all other difficulties of like character which have originated in this government have been adjusted. --Abraham Lincoln |

The Trump administration is sparking fires of hope and positive change. It’s stunning.
Lunacy? I know it sounds like that. But let me explain: Finally, our government has become so dysfunctional that millions of voters have resolved to take more responsibility for our collective future. Crash the dysfunction and shortsightedness of Congress into the crassness and ignorance of the man in the oval office and you spark the activism of teen-agers in Parkland, Florida; the outrage of previously silent “victims” in the Me Too movement; the demands of the worldwide Women’s Marches protesting Trumpism and supporting social justice. The fact that so many people are getting involved gives me hope. Hence, the addition of “Bright Spots” in FYI. As you become aware of activities in your communities in which people are taking responsibility to improve government, civic life or the lives of others, I hope you'll use the contact form on the “Your Turn” page under Readers Write to share those stories. If you have photographs that could accompany your writing, so much the better. From time to time, there also will be less serious pieces in this section—humor pieces, thoughts that spark optimism and hope, and other positive observations. Please contribute those, too, if you’re so inclined. The more voices the merrier! 7/3/18 |
